Many people miss out on all the potential that their depth finders have to offer, by always using them on the preset mode.

This preset mode is a setting that's built in at the factory, that compensates for normal water conditions for the average fishing situation.

But to get the most out of your depth finder, turn off the Auto mode, and fine tune your finder to obtain the most detail of the bottom contour, weeds, or structure.

Learn to read you unit and decipher the difference between a hard or soft bottom. Whether that large mass you see is floating grass, or a school of baitfish.

If you are using a unit that has the gray scale technology on it, this is a must!

Also, turn off that annoying Fish ID mode. Learn to read your unit, based on the size and density of the schools of baitfish, and the arches of the larger fish.

And if you really want to learn how to use your unit, take it out and leave your rods at home. This way you can concentrate on learning to read your unit instead of trying to learn it and fish at the same time. You will have a much greater learning experience during the trip.

After a few trips of fine tuning and testing your unit, and learning to use all the features with more confidence, you'll find you can obtain a greater detail of the area you are fishing, that you were missing out on before!

And it will increase your changes of catching fish.

After all..."They call it fishing, but the goal is catching!"
